The Ancient Origins of Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra, literally meaning the “science of dwelling,” is an ancient Indian architectural system that originated millennia ago. The roots of Vastu can be traced back to the Vedic period, with references found in texts like the Atharva Veda. It evolved from a deep observational practice focused on harmonizing human structures with the natural world and cosmic energies. This science is considered a component of the Sthapatya Veda, which deals with architecture and construction. Early Vastu principles were often derived from careful observations of sunlight and magnetic fields throughout the day.

Ancient sages and scholars, including the divine architect Lord Vishwakarma, are traditionally credited with formulating its guidelines. Key treatises like the Manasara, Mayamatam, and Samarangana Sutradhara provide the detailed rules for site selection and layout. The principles were applied not just to homes and palaces but also to the meticulous planning of temples and entire ancient cities, such as those of the Indus Valley Civilization. Fundamentally, Vastu seeks to balance the Pancha Bhootas (five elements)—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space—within any given structure. Even today, Vastu remains a timeless and holistic guide for creating spaces that foster health, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.
